Reader-response criticism is the way in which a person interprets a work. The interesting thing about reader-response criticism is that it is different for every person. Every persons own situations and experience effect how they interpret something that is read. Casino Royale is a very detailed book. Though we all do not have experience being spies it draws you into Bonds world and does not leave too many gaps. This is good in this particular novel because we all do not have experiences such as those that Bond has. Unfortunately this also persuades our reader response because we can truly only go on the information we have been given, because of this there is no struggle to understand or make sense of the work.
Also, because there are no "gaps" the reader is not as active as we would like to be. According to Wolfgang Iser, "the 'unwritten aspects' of a story draw the reader into the action...the reader's imagination in turn influences the way in which 'the written part of the text" is read.

I think that although Casino Royale is a very detailed book there does leave a certain “gap” for the reader to fill. There are aspects of the novel that we are not informed about, like the situation with Vesper and her boyfriend, or even minor details, like when Bond is hiding the check for 4 million franks, all we know is that he used a screw driver.
I think that there are things that are left open for the reader to interpret and view as they choose. Of course, the written text is what is it is meant to be, and say what is it meant to say, but we are not informed about everything that occurs in the novel. It is left to the reader to fill in those gaps. There are so many examples that I can give, Vesper she kills herself, but do we really know that? There is a suicide note, but we do not actually see her performing this act, one could argue that maybe she didn’t commit suicide, but she was murdered. My point is that there are so many gaps in any novel that is open to the readers interpretation, because it is impossible for a reader to gain this ultimate and divine knowledge of “everything”.
Lucy,
I am agree with you because when I read the Casino Royale I couldn't understand what's going on. But when I watch the movie I understand much much better. Also, I think sometimes when we read novel we couldn't aspects about the novel what's going to happened.
I agree with you. reader-response causes a reader to be drawn into the work of a writer making you think that you are the one being chased or writing in the diary. In a sense reader-response points "that the ego, subject, or self that we think of as being natural is in fact a product of"(cultural casino, 262) society within a text.
